The Origins of Canopy Law

I created Canopy Immigration Law in 2026, drawing upon over 15 years of experience in Canadian immigration law. Beginning as a legal assistant in this field prior to law school, I was Called to the Bar in Ontario in 2013 and have remained active in this space since then.

As an immigrant myself, I know the strains that come alongside weighing whether to make an international move. Immigrating to Canada in gradeschool, my childhood was filled with conversations with my parents about the sacrifices inherent in their decision to move from Sharjah to Dhaka to Nottingham to Toronto. I weighed the pros and cons of my own decision to study abroad twice, including when I completed a Master’s of Science in Global Migration in London, UK.

My husband and I also navigated this conversation together as well, after meeting in the UK and making the decision for him to settle here in Toronto. Now, we’re happily raising our daughter as a global citizen who understands that community, economic strength, and relationships transcend borders.

Firm Philosophy

I’m a firm believer that Canada is strengthened by strong, sustainable immigration policies. Canada should be proud to have such a diversity of industry and community. Increasing population grown will be the key to sustaining both. This is the ethos behind Canopy Immigration Law, which sees immigrants and immigrant communities as a canopy offering social and economic shelter from a climate impacted by size, geopolitical uncertainty, and labour shortages.

Based on my own life experiences, I have spent my legal career trying to ensure that my clients have honest, fully-researched advice before they make any decisions on how to proceed. I appreciate that attracting global talent and reunifying families has always required being able to navigate a complex regulatory scheme that is always changing (sometimes with little notice).

Whether I am strategizing for a family, young professional, or Canadian business, I understand the importance of distilling dense bureaucratic requirements into clear advice.

I have also seen the immigration landscape change significantly both politically and procedurally over the last 15 years. With immigration targets getting stricter across every category, it is more important than ever to think creatively. I have excelled in doing just this over the years, helping businesses and professionals in industries such as mining, technology, energy, engineering, and visual arts to work through the dozens of different application types to find the best chance of success.

Ultimately, I believe that worldwide economic and cultural prosperity is depending on being able to open borders to globalized economics, industries, and families alike.

Advocating for a Stronger Canada

My practice is also greatly informed by motherhood, which has brought a re-energized passion for strengthening Canada’s future and ensuring equity, transparency, and fairness both in my practice and the world in which my daughter is growing up in. I am proud to provide an accessible space, and to advocate for progressive ideals across many different political spaces.

Over the course of my career, I have increasingly sought opportunities to comment on immigration policy, and think of it as integral to my work as a legal advocate for my clients. Canopy Immigration Law will continue to engage with government officials and other stakeholders on how best to fully realize the benefits of immigration, immigrants, and a growing citizenry, drawing on my previous advocacy with the Canadian Bar Association’s Immigration Section, and No One is Illegal.

Land Acknowledgment

The land this firm operates in is the traditional territory of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnawbe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis people. I also acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit, and the Williams Treaties signed with multiple Mississaugas and Chippewa bands.

As a Canadian immigrant driving further immigration to Canada, I take seriously the responsibility to ally with the original inhabitants of Kanata and Tkarón:to, and will be dedicating a portion of firm proceeds in solidarity with these communities.
